There are many ways to light up our city with this year’s Illuminares. Whether you want to build your own lantern, or craft a character, bring light to the night, or give life to a giant heron, you’ve got lots of options. Presented at 7 community centers through the city, our workshops are focused on Puppetry, Performance, and Lantern Building, to facilitate creativity in a variety of disciplines. Pre-registration is not necessary, but participation is definitely encouraged!

UPDATE #2: WE’VE ADDED ONE MORE FLASH MOB PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP! If you missed them last week, this friday you’ll get the opportunity to learn the choreography, create a character, and costume yourself – all in one go. Friday, July 29, 6-9pm, at the Roundhouse Community Centre.
Puppeting: Come Take Flight With Us!
For this year’s Illuminares we are building a 30ft tall Giant Heron puppet, and are looking for people to bring it to life! In our 2 part puppeteering workshop, participants will learn how to move as a group, and the secrets of creating life-like motion in a parade puppet. Participation by donation.

Lantern Making: The Classic!
Our lantern workshops are back again to help you build the creations you envision! All in preparation for the Lantern Procession on July 30th, 5pm starting at Harbour Green Park, leading to Canada Place.
Families and children ages 5+ are welcome (with parental accompaniment). A $5-10 donation is requested to help us cover materials costs. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Performance: Flash Mob Frenzy!
Participants will work with a theatrical director, and community choreographer to create an interactive performance to present on the evening of Illuminares (July 30th). Participation by donation.

My children are 3 and 5 and I was so looking forward to taking them to Trout Lake Illuminares, but it’s been moved downtown where the space is just not the same!!! Is there any chance the Trout Lake festival will be re-instituted? I respect that you are trying something new, but the history and beauty of the Trout Lake estival seems too sad to leave behind already!

I’d like to volunteer for the Strathcona Community Centre lantern making workshop, Wednesday July 27th.

i was just wondering if you are still looking for participants for the heron puppet?
Oh absolutely! This Wednesday and Thursday, as well as next Wednesday and Thursday we’ll be welcoming as many participants to the heron workshop as want to come. Though there are 4 workshops, you only need to attend one wednesday and one thursday to get all the info to bring our avian friend to life!
I’ve never done the lantern workshops, and have a few questions. After you make a lantern at the workshop, do you take it home with you & then bring to Illuminares, or can you just leave it to get included in the decorations? Also, do people typically attend the full 3 hours of the workshop, or just a portion?
